Participation in the Corona Initiative: Hamburg Pulls Together

Within a matter of weeks, the aid initiative “Hamburg packt’s zusammen” wasset up. By pooling their resources, in-kind donations and financial contributions, the partner companies – including MB Energy (Marquard & Bahls) – aim to support people in Hamburg and the surrounding area who are struggling particularly hard with the effects of the coronavirus pandemic. These include single parents, families, the elderly, the homeless and students. The goal is to pack 25,000 care parcels tailored to people’s needs who have fallen on hard times as a result of the pandemic and its consequences. So far, over 30 staff members from the company’s Hamburg headquarters have taken part in this large-scale packing campaign to ensure the bags can be distributed promptly via the partner organisation Hanseatic Help e.V.

Hamburg rocks together: Support for musicians and bands

Under the slogan “Businesses bring culture back to the stage”, the launch event for a series of live-streamed concerts, initiated by Hamburg-based companies, took place on 17 June. The initiative aims to provide targeted support to musicians and bands who have been particularly hard hit by the coronavirus pandemic. To kick things off, the Grammophon Jazzband took to the virtual stage with a varied mix of jazz, pop and soul. Behind “Hamburg rockt’s zusammen” and the associated live-streaming concert lies a wide-ranging fundraising campaign. All donations received by the end of June 2021 were matched by MB Energy (Marquard & Bahls) and the other participating companies. The beneficiary is the Hamburg-based initiative RockCity e.V., which has been supporting more than 3,000 musicians in the Hanseatic city for 33 years.

Social X-Mas Gift: 7,200 euros for a good cause

In total, our staff donated €2,400 to our three project partners – the Löwenhaus, Arztmobil and KidsWelcome. We are delighted with your fantastic participation and would like to thank you very much!

MB Energy sponsors a Hamburg scholarship for students

On 26 April 2021, the Hamburg Stipendium, awarded by the Studierendenwerk Hamburg, was presented for the third time. The Hamburg Stipendium is aimed at students from various universities in Hamburg who, having overcome challenging personal circumstances, have embarked on a higher education journey and are studying with great dedication and success. The award therefore recognises not only academic achievement, but also social engagement and intercultural and personal skills. This year, the scholarships were awarded to 21 students with a migrant or refugee background. In addition to financial support of 150 euros per month for each scholarship recipient, the one-year programme also includes non-financial support in the form of invitations to events where the aspiring academics can forge valuable contacts with institutions and companies. In 2021, MB Energy sponsored the scholarship for the first time with a contribution of 2,200 euros, thereby securing a scholarship for one student.

MB Energy is partnering with Tree-Nation on a reforestation project

Trees are vital partners in climate protection, as they can both absorb and store carbon and produce oxygen. However, 13 million hectares of forest are lost every year – 17 per cent of global_{CO₂ emissions} are caused by deforestation alone.

MB Energy is running for charity at the HSH Nordbank Run in 2019

The HSH Nordbank Run in HafenCity is an annual four-kilometre charity fun run through Hamburg’s new district. For every registered runner, a donation of six euros – or ten euros per team – goes to the charity Kinder helfen Kindern e.V. The Kinder helfen Kindern initiative uses this money to fund projects that give children and teenagers from low-income families the opportunity to join sports clubs.

Charity Rally from Germany to The Gambia: Aid that makes a difference

On 3 March 2018, Tanja Meyer of OIL! petrol stations and her rally partner Hans-Werner Hertzsch set off on a real adventure alongside around 50 other teams: they took part in a rally where the focus was not on time, but on simply reaching the finish. Their destination was Banjul, the capital of The Gambia, over 7,000 kilometres away. The pair covered the distance in a car that had been purchased specifically for the occasion. They paid all the travel costs out of their own pockets – including accommodation, tolls, meals and the return flight, as well as the purchase of the vehicle.

Working together for equal opportunities: MB Energy and JOBLINGE

Since 2016, MB Energy (Marquard & Bahls) has been working in partnership with the non-profit initiative JOBLINGE Kompass to support young people with a refugee background in entering the job market. Numerous employees – including those from the MB Energy Group – have been actively involved in this initiative through the mentoring programme as well as language and conversation training, bringing the partnership to life. Here at MB Energy, we are particularly committed to continuing this well-established diversity project – because social inclusion and diversity are important to us.

Over 200,000 trees: BWOC is boosting climate protection

Our subsidiary BWOC has set up a programme that offers customers with a fuel card the opportunity to offset emissions from the fuel they purchase by contributing to reforestation projects. When a BWOC fuel card is used, 10 per cent of the resulting emissions are generally offset through_{CO₂ sequestration} projects. This amount is funded by BWOC. Customers can choose whether they wish to cover the additional costs for the sequestration of a further 40 per cent or 90 per cent_{of CO₂}.

14 years of climate action: 162,000 trees planted

Forests have a wide range of positive effects on the climate and the environment as a whole. The Pro Klima initiative – a joint initiative by MB Energy, Petronord and OIL! petrol stations – therefore supports, amongst other things, reforestation projects in Germany. For example, in collaboration with the Schleswig-Holstein State Forestry Authority and the Schutzgemeinschaft Deutscher Wald e.V., over 162,000 trees have already been planted in recent years. The project began in 2008 on a 100,000 m² site in Bönebüttel, Schleswig-Holstein, where 40,000 trees were planted. Further locations followed, with between 10,000 and 23,300 trees planted at each: Borstel-Hohenraden, Hemdingen, Hohenlockstedt, Bad Salzuflen, Weye, Hasloh, Forst Klövensteen and Sarlhusen. As part of further reforestation campaigns by the Pro Klima initiative, several roadside and park trees were also planted in North Rhine-Westphalia and Bavaria to enhance the urban landscape. Employees from the participating companies play an active role in the reforestation efforts, which also gives them an insight into the project’s progress. In addition, joint reforestation campaigns are organised with customers as well as local school classes and nurseries.

In 2020, no joint reforestation activities took place due to the coronavirus pandemic; however, the initiative took on the sponsorship of a 2,500 m² area in Löhne, North Rhine-Westphalia.

Furthermore, from 2008 to 2017, the Pro Klima initiative supported the OceanRAIN research project at the CliSAP Cluster of Excellence at the University of Hamburg, which aims to gain a better understanding of the effects of climate change through precipitation measurements and the analysis of satellite data, and to draw conclusions for environmentally friendly action.
