Participation in the Corona Initiative: Hamburg packt´s zusammen

Within just a few weeks, the relief initiative “Hamburg Packt’s Zusammen” was launched. By pooling their resources, in-kind donations, and financial contributions, the partner companies—including MB Energy (Marquard & Bahls)—aim to support people in Hamburg and the surrounding area who are struggling particularly hard with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. This includes single parents, families, seniors, the homeless, and students. The goal: to pack 25,000 care packages tailored to the needs of people who have fallen on hard times due to the pandemic and its consequences. So far, more than 30 employees from the Hamburg headquarters have participated in the large-scale packing campaign to ensure that the bags can be distributed promptly through the partner organization Hanseatic Help e.V.

Hamburg Rocks Together: Help for Musicians and Bands

Under the motto “Companies Bring Culture Back to the Stage,” the kickoff event for a series of live-streamed concerts launched by Hamburg-based companies took place on June 17. The initiative is designed to provide targeted support to musicians and bands who have been particularly hard hit by the COVID-19 pandemic. Kicking off the series on the virtual stage was the Grammophon Jazzband with a diverse mix of jazz, pop, and soul. Behind “Hamburg Rockt’s Zusammen” and the associated live-streaming concert is a broad-based fundraising campaign. All donations received by the end of June 2021 were matched by MB Energy (Marquard & Bahls) and the other participating companies. The beneficiary is the Hamburg-based initiative RockCity e.V., which has been supporting more than 3,000 musicians in the Hanseatic city for 33 years.

Social X-Mas Gift: 7,200 euros for a good cause

MB Energy Sponsors Hamburg Scholarship for Students

On April 26, 2021, the Hamburg Scholarship, awarded by the Studierendenwerk Hamburg, was presented for the third time. The Hamburg Scholarship is intended for students at various universities in Hamburg who, despite facing unique life challenges, have pursued higher education and are studying with great dedication and success. The award recognizes not only academic achievement but also social engagement and intercultural and personal skills. This year, the scholarships were awarded to 21 students with a background in migration or as refugees. In addition to financial support of 150 euros per month for each scholarship recipient, the one-year program also includes non-financial support in the form of invitations to events where the aspiring academics can establish valuable contacts with institutions and companies. In 2021, MB Energy sponsored the scholarship for the first time with a contribution of 2,200 euros, thereby securing a scholarship for one student.

MB Energy Partners with Tree-Nation for Reforestation

Trees are important partners in climate protection because they can both absorb and store carbon and produce oxygen. However, 13 million hectares of forest are lost every year — 17% of global CO2 emissions are caused by deforestation alone.

MB Energy runs for a good cause at the 2019 HSH Nordbank Run

The HSH Nordbank Run in HafenCity is an annual four-kilometer corporate run for charity through Hamburg’s new district. For every registered runner, a donation of six euros—and ten euros per team—goes to the organization Kinder helfen Kindern e.V. With this money, the Kinder helfen Kindern initiative funds projects that give children and teenagers from low-income families the opportunity to join sports clubs.

For the 13th consecutive year, runners from MB Energy (Marquard & Bahls) and its subsidiaries took part in the HSH Nordbank Charity Run in Hamburg’s HafenCity, raising money for a good cause with every meter they ran. For each of the 47 registered runners, six euros were donated to the “Kinder helfen Kindern” association, resulting in a total donation of 155,000 euros for the organization.

Charity Rally from Germany to Gambia: Aid That Makes a Difference

On March 3, 2018, Tanja Meyer of OIL! Gas Stations and her rally partner Hans-Werner Hertzsch set out on a real adventure alongside about 50 other teams: They took part in a rally where the goal wasn’t to beat the clock, but simply to reach the finish line. Their destination was Banjul, the capital of The Gambia, over 7,000 kilometers away. The two covered the distance in a car that was purchased specifically for this purpose. They paid for all travel expenses—including lodging, tolls, meals, and the return flight, as well as the purchase of the vehicle—out of their own pockets.

Working Together for Equal Opportunity: MB Energy and JOBLINGE

Since 2016, MB Energy (Marquard & Bahls) has been partnering with the nonprofit initiative JOBLINGE Kompass to help young people with refugee backgrounds enter the workforce. Numerous employees—including those from the MB Energy Group—have been actively involved in this effort through the mentoring program as well as language and conversation training, bringing the partnership to life. At MB Energy, we are particularly committed to continuing this established diversity project—because social inclusion and diversity are important to us.

Over 200,000 trees: BWOC is strengthening climate protection

Our subsidiary BWOC has launched a program that offers customers with a fuel card the opportunity to offset emissions from the fuel they purchase by contributing to reforestation projects. When a BWOC fuel card is used, 10% of the resulting emissions are generally offset through CO2 sequestration projects. This amount is funded by BWOC. Customers can decide whether they would like to cover the additional costs to sequester an additional 40% or 90% of CO2 .

Employees Get Involved on Make a Difference Day

Employees of MB Energy (Marquard & Bahls) in Hamburg volunteer their professional and business expertise as part of an international network of entrepreneurs and executives under the age of 40 (Jaycees, JCI) at the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce. They are committed to running their businesses in a socially responsible manner and to personally contributing to the development of the local economy. To this end, various programs have been established across six different project groups. The annual highlight for the Jaycees in Hamburg and other German cities is “Make a Difference Day,” an event organized by active and former JCI members in close collaboration with social initiatives. Once a year, volunteers use this event to provide over 300 children, teenagers, and adults from various welfare organizations with an unforgettable day filled with diverse cultural and sports activities. Employees of the Mabanaft Group have also been actively involved with the Jaycees and “Make a Difference Day” in recent years.
