At our Blumensand tank terminal in the Port of Hamburg, one of Germany's first large import terminals for ammonia and methanol storage is being developed. With this project, MB Energy is expanding import and storage infrastructure for ammonia and methanol to support supply chains in the shipping, transport and industrial sectors.
About our Ammonia Import Terminal
The first step is to establish infrastructure for importing ammonia, which not only serves as a storage medium for hydrogen but can also be used as an industrial and fertilizer/chemical industry raw material and as an alternative fuel in shipping. Importing these molecules will support the domestic ammonia market and lay the foundations for the expansion of the hydrogen economy. In the long term, this is expected to further drive the energy transition in shipping. The terminal is designed to also process ammonia products that may be marketed under lower-carbon or renewable categories, subject to technical feasibility, market availability and applicable regulatory requirements. A new storage tank for imported ammonia will be constructed at the site, alongside upgrades to marine and inland vessels berths. Loading facilities for ammonia rail cars are also being planned. Future plans may include to connect an ammonia cracker to the ammonia terminal where ammonia can be converted into hydrogen and feed into the hydrogen grid.
Permit Granted for Ammonia Import Terminal
In April 2026, the Hamburg Authority for the Environment, Climate, Energy, and Agriculture (BUKEA) granted MB Energy a permit to build and operate an ammonia import terminal. This milestone paves the way for further progress toward a final investment decision and project implementation.
About our Methanol Infrastructure Project
MB Energy plans to convert four existing petrol tanks at the Blumensand tank farm in the Port of Hamburg for the storage of methanol. The project has taken a positive final investment decision (FID) to build a planned total capacity of up to 20,000 cubic metres, the infrastructure is intended to support the import, storage and distribution of low-carbon methanol. This will create additional infrastructure to meet the growing demand from the shipping, transport and industrial sectors.
Methanol is a versatile energy source and raw material for shipping, industry and other energy-intensive applications. MB Energy combines the supply of biomethanol and e-methanol with procurement, logistics and infrastructure to create integrated solutions across the supply chain.
