About New Energy Gate Hamburg
The New Energy Gate Hamburg is one of MB Energy's flagship projects for the energy transition and marks the arrival of large scale imported cleaner energy in Hamburg.. At the Blumensand tank terminal, located in the heart of the Port of Hamburg, space is being created for hydrogen derivatives and renewable energy solutions.
Import of ammonia
The first step is to establish infrastructure for importing ammonia, which not only serves as a storage medium for hydrogen but can also be used as an industrial and fertilizer/chemical industry raw material and as an alternative fuel in shipping. Importing these molecules will support the domestic ammonia market and lay the foundations for the expansion of the hydrogen economy. In the long term, this is expected to further drive the energy transition in shipping. The terminal is designed to also process lower-carbon and renewable ammonia, subject to technical feasibility, market availability and applicable regulatory requirements.
A new storage tank for imported ammonia will be constructed at the site, alongside upgrades to marine and inland vessels berths. Loading facilities for ammonia rail cars are also being planned.
Future plans may include to connect an ammonia cracker to the ammonia terminal where ammonia can be converted into hydrogen and feed into the hydrogen grid.
Permit Granted for Ammonia Import Terminal
Hamburg’s Authority for Environment, Climate, Energy and Agriculture (BUKEA) has granted in April 2026 MB Energy the permit to build and operate an ammonia import terminal. This milestone enables further progress toward final investment decision and project realization.
