P2X Europe, the joint venture between H&R and Mabanaft, is gathering pace: production is set to begin shortly at H&R, alongside the marketing of synthesis-based e-fuels and waxes derived from renewable raw materials at the Hamburg site. Using the innovative demonstration plant provided by the Karlsruhe-based technology partner INERATEC, the plan is to produce around 200 tonnes of e-fuels for transport and around 150 tonnes of waxes for applications in the cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and food industries each year. H&R and Mabanaft are thus confirming their pioneering role in climate protection within their respective business segments and will benefit from the integration of the Power-to-Liquid(PtL) demonstration plant at the H&R production site through the existing electrolysis and hydrogen capacity. “We are currently feeding the plant with the feedstocksCO₂ and hydrogen, bringing the reactors up to operational readiness and carrying out final adjustments to the setup,” explains Detlev Wösten, Chief Sustainability Officer at H&R and Co-CEO of P2X Europe, regarding the current phase of production preparation. All project partners are already looking forward to the final start of production and the first usable, sustainably produced synthetic products.
A reliable partner in the energy transition
With this demonstration plant, the companies are laying the groundwork for the use of sustainably produced hydrocarbons on an industrial scale. At the same time, they are providing their customers with important proof of concept and concrete evidence that they are reliable partners in the energy transition. “With this highly innovative plant, we are gathering important know-how and strong arguments in favour of using synthesis-based products. In the case of Mabanaft, this applies in particular to their use in road and air transport,” explains Volker Ebeling, Senior Vice President New Energy, Chemicals & Gas at Mabanaft.
Information on these potentials is particularly important to the partners: en2x – the Fuels & Energy Trade Association – is utilising this innovation from within its membership to demonstrate the transformation of the industry to industry professionals and interested opinion leaders in an exemplary and practical manner via a mobile multimedia and information centre. At the “futurefuels.experience”, groups of visitors have the opportunity, right on site, to learn about key aspects of hydrogen and alternative fuels and raw materials, and to discuss their contribution to climate protection – for example, how the PtL process uses green hydrogen and high-purity biogenic carbon dioxide to produce future-proof fuels and heating media, as well as feedstocks for specialised chemical and pharmaceutical products, via synthesis – for cross-sectoral use in areas such as mobility, heat supply or the chemical industry – sectors that would otherwise be difficult to decarbonise.
P2X Europe is the joint Power-to-Liquid venture between Mabanaft GmbH & Co. KG and the H&R Group. Both partners hold equal stakes in the Hamburg-based company. P2X Europe will source Power-to-X products (e-fuels and specialised petrochemicals) from relevant projects and market them through the respective distribution channels.
