Five school classes from the Cuxhaven district have the opportunity to visit the “Ahlenmoor” and the “MoorIZ” information centre, where they can experience the role of moors first-hand. Instead of maths or Spanish, the pupils will learn about climate protection and biodiversity conservation. They can enjoy a guided tour of the moor and the school laboratory and even take a ride on the moor railway. Out in nature, the young people learn why moors are among the most effective carbon sinks of all terrestrial habitats. However, they also learn that many moorlands in Germany have been drained, severely impairing their function. Against this backdrop, in 2021, MB Energy's “Initiative Pro Klima” added the rewetting and restoration of moors as a further focus of its activities.
“MB Energy founded the Pro Klima initiative in 2008 to emphasize issues such as sustainability and invest in projects that help to deal with CO2 emissions,” says Nazanin Celebi, Team Lead Group Sustainability at MB Energy. “There are three key areas. As well as supporting climate projects, we provide advice on relevant energy issues and offer more sustainable solutions to customers that are interested.” Since 2008, the company has been making targeted investments in climate projects under the umbrella of the “Initiative Pro Klima”. The initiative began with the afforestation of grassland areas in Schleswig-Holstein and a research project at the University of Hamburg’s KlimaCampus. Since then, this commitment has continuously evolved, now particularly focusing on the protection and restoration of moorlands.
Following its previous support for the local “Am Löh” climate bog in Ahlenmoor, the initiative is now the exclusive sponsor of the preparatory measures for rewetting the so-called “Steertmoor” climate bog. Alongside comprehensive preliminary planning, the rewetting project includes CO₂ calculations based on the GEST methodology and technical construction supervision. By the turn of the year 2025/2026, numerous preparatory steps will have been completed, with further work as part of the construction supervision scheduled for spring 2026.
By combining concrete climate projects, scientific collaboration, energy consultancy and educational programmes, MB Energy demonstrates its commitment to take a holistic view on its own responsibility for the environment and climate change, and to actively contribute to counter these effects.
