Mabanaft plans hydrogen refuelling station for trucks in Lübeck

The energy company Mabanaft is taking on a project to build a hydrogen refuelling station for heavy goods vehicles in Lübeck. This marks an important step for the company towards establishing a reliable hydrogen economy in the transport sector. The hydrogen refuelling station, developed and planned by Hypion GmbH, is set to have a refuelling capacity of up to 2,000 kilograms of hydrogen per day. It is scheduled to be integrated into the filling station network of Mabanaft’s subsidiary Staack Pooltankstellen and is due to commence operations at the end of 2025.

The planned location for the hydrogen refuelling station is a site not far from the A1 and A20 motorway junction. Mabanaft already operates a diesel refuelling station on the same site. The hydrogen refuelling station is specifically designed to meet the needs of heavy goods vehicles and will eventually be able to serve up to 50 lorries per day. The planning applications for the construction have already been submitted. Construction will then take place in the second half of the year. The project has already received a grant commitment of over €5.1 million in 2022 under the German government’s ‘Climate-Friendly Commercial Vehicles and Infrastructure (KsNI)’ scheme. The aim is to further boost the market for hydrogen and fuel cell technology, particularly for light and heavy commercial vehicles.

By investing in a hydrogen refuelling station, Mabanaft is committed to the multi-fuel approach
“We are convinced of the multi-fuel approach – that is, the idea that we can strengthen the energy transition through various fuel solutions. After all, we want to offer our customers precisely the energy solutions they need on their path to decarbonisation. Our planned hydrogen refuelling station in Lübeck is a further commitment to this,” explains Volker Ebeling, Senior Vice President New Energy, Supply & Infrastructure at Mabanaft.

“Hydrogen clearly holds enormous potential for heavy-duty transport, particularly over long distances: Refuelling times and payloads are comparable to those of diesel-powered vehicles, and the range per tankful is up to 800 kilometres,” emphasises Florian Lückmann, Head of Commercial Road Transport at Mabanaft. He continues: “We also want to realise the potential of hydrogen through a reliable and comprehensive network of hydrogen refuelling stations. To this end, we are planning the gradual roll-out of a cross-border refuelling infrastructure for hydrogen.”

The EU’s AFIR (Alternative Fuel Infrastructure Regulation) stipulates that, by 2030, hydrogen refuelling stations for lorries and cars must be established every 200 km along the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) and at all urban hubs. With the hydrogen refuelling station in Lübeck, Mabanaft is making a contribution to this planned network. The company is particularly focused on hydrogen refuelling stations designed to meet the capacity and accessibility requirements of heavy goods vehicles. Through its Swedish subsidiary PS Energi, Mabanaft has already built two hydrogen refuelling stations in Sweden and secured funding for three further Swedish sites.

Mabanaft is implementing the project in collaboration with Hypion
The project was developed to investment-ready stage under the leadership of Hypion, a project developer from Schleswig-Holstein specialising in the hydrogen economy. Mabanaft is joining the project with immediate effect as the sole investor for the Lübeck site and will continue to implement it in collaboration with Hypion. Subject to regulatory approvals, Mabanaft could begin construction work from this summer. “An experienced and competent partner with reliable knowledge of the region is indispensable in a project of this kind,” said Volker Ebeling of Mabanaft. Scheduled operation of the hydrogen refuelling station in the tankpool24 network
The hydrogen refuelling station will be operated as a Staack Pool station within the tankpool24 network.
