Mabanaft reaches agreement with Hapag-Lloyd to supply B30 bunker fuel in Hamburg

The energy company Mabanaft has reached an agreement with the shipping company Hapag-Lloyd to supply the B30 biofuel. An initial trial delivery of 1,000 metric tonnes (mt) of B30 VLSFO from Mabanaft’s Waltershof tank farm was scheduled for 12 December at the Port of Hamburg for the container ship Delaware Express.

The delivery is preceded by a comprehensive analysis of potential bio-components that Mabanaft can blend into the B30 biofuel. To this end, all options were assessed for their quality and their potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The agreement with Hapag-Lloyd initially covers a delivery of 1,000 metric tonnes of B30. Further volumes could follow in 2025.

Reducing greenhouse gas emissions in shipping with B30 biofuel
“The demands on the shipping sector to use cleaner fuels will continue to rise in the coming years,” says Helmut Oldekamp, Head of Marine Fuels & Industry at Mabanaft. “We are prepared for this and will support our customers as best we can with solutions for the energy transition.” “With B30 biofuel, Mabanaft can supply a fuel that can be used without any engine modifications and can therefore reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the short term.”

“We are delighted that Mabanaft is supplying biofuels at the Port of Hamburg. Collaboration between suppliers and buyers, as well as the conduct of field trials, will help to further improve the availability of biofuels. We aim to achieve net-zero fleet operations by 2045 – and biofuels will play an important role in this,” said Jan Christensen, Senior Director of Global Fuel Purchasing at Hapag-Lloyd.

Mabanaft aims to expand its biofuel business in the Port of Hamburg
To date, the Port of Hamburg has played only a minor role in the bunkering business for fuels such as B30. Until now, Rotterdam and Singapore have been the main hubs for the handling of B30. “We now want to change that,” confirms Michael Wiring, Senior Trader Marine Fuels at Mabanaft. “The agreement with Hapag-Lloyd is a great opportunity to make more B30 biofuels available in Hamburg in future.” The initiative underlines Mabanaft’s commitment to offering customers a broad and flexible product range that provides both conventional and low-carbon fuel solutions.
