Fairplay Towage plans to integrate hydrogen-powered tugs into its fleet in the Port of Hamburg over the coming years. This underlines the increased focus on new technologies and more sustainable energy sources in the shipping industry.
To enable the use of hydrogen-powered tugs, it is necessary to provide not only the hydrogen itself but also the appropriate infrastructure for bunkering. The Mabanaft Group, as a supplier of marine fuels and operator of storage facilities in the Port of Hamburg, intends to expand its range of marine fuels to include hydrogen and to utilise its Hamburg storage facilities for this purpose, thereby enabling it to supply Fairplay Towage with hydrogen.
Hydrogen is regarded as one of the keys to decarbonising shipping, as it offers a zero-emission alternative to conventional fossil fuels.

The MoU between Mabanaft and Fairplay Towage marks the start of a long-term strategic partnership. Under the agreement, Mabanaft will meet Fairplay Towage’s hydrogen requirements in the Port of Hamburg, whilst ensuring quality, reliability and the highest level of safety.
In November 2022, Mabanaft took the first step towards establishing New Energy Gate – a terminal for sustainable hydrogen products that will enable Hamburg to import large quantities of climate-friendly energy – by announcing its plans to build an ammonia import terminal in the Port of Hamburg.
