“Our aim is to contribute to the decarbonisation of the transport sector in the short to medium term through the production of carbon-neutral e-fuels. HIF’s projects in the Magallanes region boast the world’s best wind resources, enabling us to produce climate-neutral e-fuels on a large scale and at competitive prices. Mabanaft is a leader in responsible energy supply, trading and logistics, and we are delighted to have such an innovative company as a potential major customer,” explains Cesar Norton, President of HIF.
Jonathan Perkins, CEO of Mabanaft, emphasises the importance of this collaboration and comments: “Mabanaft aims to be one of the first companies in Germany and Europe to supply its customers withcarbon-neutral e-fuels via its extensive network of petrol stations and wholesale sites. Our collaboration with HIF will enable us to bring significant quantities of this innovative fuel to the German and European markets within a few years. We look forward to becoming a key customer of this ambitious and forward-looking project.”
The project involves using wind energy to produce hydrogen, which is then combined withCO₂ captured from the atmosphere to produce methanol. The methanol is subsequently converted into petrol. HIF intends to begin construction of the first commercial-scale plant in 2022. E-petrol can be used as a direct substitute for fossil-based petrol without requiring any changes to existing logistics, infrastructure or engines.
In December 2020, HIF announced financial support from the German government for its Haru Oni pilot plant, in which Porsche, Siemens Energy, Enel Green Power, ENAP and ExxonMobil are partners.
Mabanaft GmbH & Co. KG is a subsidiary of Marquard & Bahls, an agile, independent holding company in the energy and chemicals sector.
