Last Friday, the Hamburg-based energy company Mabanaft reached another milestone in the planned construction of its ammonia import terminal in the Port of Hamburg and outlined the necessary construction measures at a planning conference with the Authority for the Environment, Climate, Energy and Agriculture (BUKEA). The construction works include, amongst other things, the construction of a tank for the storage of liquid ammonia at Mabanaft’s existing Blumensand tank terminal in the Port of Hamburg.
The next step is to initiate the approval process
In the next step, Mabanaft will submit the application documents to BUKEA, thereby initiating the approval process in accordance with the Federal Immission Control Act.
Successful nautical risk analysis
Last week, the so-called HAZID risk analysis was carried out over several days and successfully completed. As part of this, experts, together with representatives from the Hamburg Port Authority (HPA), assessed potential nautical risks associated with the operation of the terminal, as well as with the arrival and departure of so-called Very Large Gas Carriers at the Blumensand site.
Import terminal to provide access to large quantities of climate-friendly energy
Volker Ebeling, Senior Vice President of New Energy, Chemicals and Gas at Mabanaft, said: “The ammonia import terminal is the first step towards establishing New Energy Gate, a terminal for sustainable hydrogen products that will enable Hamburg to import large quantities of climate-friendly energy.” He continued: “With the application conference ahead of the BUKEA meeting, we are taking a significant step closer to this goal. We are now working flat out to initiate the approval process.”
Together with its anchor client, Air Products, Mabanaft announced the construction of a large-scale terminal for clean energy last November in the presence of Federal Minister Dr Robert Habeck and the First Mayor of Hamburg, Dr Peter Tschentscher. The project, involving an investment in the hundreds of millions, plans to import clean ammonia from the end of 2026 onwards at Mabanaft’s Blumensand tank terminal. Some of the ammonia is to be converted into hydrogen using hydrogen production plants, whilst some is to be sold as bunker fuel.
