Pioneering Hydrogen Infrastructure: Mabanaft joins TransHyDE 2.0 as Founding Member

The Hamburg-based energy company Mabanaft is taking on its role as a founding member of the newly launched TransHyDE 2.0 initiative. The initiative aims to drive forward the development of a sustainable European hydrogen infrastructure. The initiative will be officially launched on 6 May 2025 in Berlin with the inaugural meeting.

With its extensive expertise in future-oriented fuels, Mabanaft is making an important contribution to the establishment of a sustainable hydrogen economy.

The engine room of tomorrow’s hydrogen infrastructure

TransHyDE 2.0 builds on the national flagship hydrogen project TransHyDE and expands the approach to include industry-driven content. The initiative sees itself as:

  • The nucleus of new hydrogen infrastructures and spin-off projects
  • A consultative platform for politics, business and society
  • A facilitator between industry and research
  • A network spanning the hydrogen value chain

The focus is on seven implementation platforms (gH₂, LH₂, NH₃, LOHC, DME & CO₂, methanol) as well as four research platforms covering the topics of system analysis, standardisation & safety, market & regulation, and acceptance.

Philipp Kroepels, Director of New Energy at Mabanaft, comments: “Participation in the TransHyDE 2.0 initiative is another key building block in our mission to supply our customers with clean hydrogen and its derivatives. By collaborating with stakeholders from industry and academia, we can share and pool knowledge, actively drive forward the development of a sustainable hydrogen infrastructure in Europe, and offer innovative solutions for decarbonisation. We are already developing import infrastructure for ammonia and hydrogen in Hamburg, one of Europe’s largest ports, and are working to retrofit our tanks for the import and distribution of methanol.”

TransHyDE 2.0 is supported by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action. Dr Axel Bree will join the advisory board. The initiative is launching with twelve founding members from the fields of research, industry and business, including Mabanaft GmbH & Co. KG and organisations such as Clean World Hydrogen Consulting GmbH, ENERTRAG SE and Fraunhofer IEG.

The designated founding board comprises representatives from the founding member companies, including Dr Stefan Kaufmann (Clean World Hydrogen Consulting GmbH) as chair, as well as other leading figures from industry and research. TransHyDE 2.0 invites all interested parties to attend the launch event on 6 May 2025 and to become part of the hydrogen future.
