MB Energy inaugurates Hydrogen Refuelling Station for trucks in Lübeck

On 29 January, the MB Energy Group celebrated a major milestone on the path to establishing a reliable hydrogen infrastructure: the opening of its hydrogen refuelling station for heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) in Lübeck. Construction of the facility began in July 2025 following the granting of the official planning permission. The official opening was attended by a number of key customers, partners and other stakeholders, including Jan Lindenau, Mayor of the Hanseatic City of Lübeck.

Designed by Hypion, the refuelling station has a daily capacity of up to 2,000 kilograms of hydrogen and can refuel up to 50 lorries per day. The new hydrogen refuelling station is strategically located not far from the A1 and A20 motorway junction, where the MB Energy Group already operates a diesel refuelling station. The new depot refuelling station will be seamlessly integrated into the existing infrastructure of the MB Energy Group’s Commercial Road Transport division. The division already operates more than 400 conventional refuelling stations within the tankpool24 network.

“It is a great moment for us to be able to inaugurate this facility today,” says Philipp Kroepels, Director of New Energy at MB Energy. “Thanks to our team, as well as our partners and suppliers, who have worked hard over the past few months to complete the construction, we are now turning a vision into a tangible contribution to the hydrogen economy in Germany.”

The project has received a grant commitment from the Federal Ministry of Transport under the “Climate-Friendly Commercial Vehicles and Infrastructure (KsNI)” scheme.

“This refuelling station is an excellent addition to our network. We look forward to welcoming both existing and new customers here, thereby expanding the range of solutions we offer,” adds Florian Lückmann, Director of Commercial Road Transport at MB Energy. “With short refuelling times, a long range and no compromise on payload, hydrogen offers real advantages for commercial logistics and long-distance transport. This is just the beginning – we are working resolutely to establish a reliable and scalable network of refuelling stations for carbon-free energy products for the lorry sector.”

The MB Energy Group is continuing to drive forward the implementation of its multi-fuel approach and is investing in hydrogen, biofuels and synthetic fuels (e-fuels) to offer its customers tailor-made solutions on their path to decarbonisation. Through its Swedish subsidiary, the MB Energy Group has already built hydrogen refuelling stations in Sweden in 2025 and secured funding for further sites.

The Lübeck project was developed, planned and implemented in close collaboration with Hypion GmbH, a specialist in hydrogen infrastructure and project development.

“With the opening of the Lübeck H2 Hub, we have implemented our second high-capacity hydrogen refuelling station project for heavy-duty transport in Schleswig-Holstein, following the one in Neumünster,” emphasises Dr Stefan Rehm, Managing Director of Hypion. “As a project developer and pioneer in the sustainable hydrogen market, we are able – with strong and ambitious partners such as MB Energy – to set the course at an early stage so that zero-emission transport, in this case using hydrogen, can become established in the near future. We are happy to play our part in this.”

The hydrogen refuelling station is operated as part of the Tankpool24 network, which comprises over 2,000 refuelling stations across Europe and more than 750 in Germany. Integration and management are handled by the Commercial Road Transport division of the MB Energy Group.

With three hydrogen refuelling stations now in operation, MB Energy is underlining its aim to enable future-oriented commercial transport solutions and to drive forward the energy transition in the mobility sector.
