MB Energy takes over Hydrogen Refuelling Station in Neumünster

The MB Energy Group has reached another milestone on the path to establishing a reliable hydrogen infrastructure: In addition to the recently inaugurated hydrogen refuelling station for heavy-duty vehicles (lorries) in Lübeck, the company has signed an agreement to take over a hydrogen refuelling station in Neumünster, with effect from 1 January 2026.

The refuelling station, designed for lorries and with a maximum capacity of up to 2,000 kilograms of hydrogen per day, was inaugurated by Hypion in November 2023. The automated hydrogen refuelling station is conveniently located in the Neumünster logistics hub, close to the A7 motorway, and is open to the public for refuelling lorries and cars. It was the first two-metric-tonne hydrogen refuelling station in Europe to meet the requirements of the EU’s AFIR (Alternative Fuel Infrastructure Regulation), which stipulates that hydrogen refuelling stations must be provided every 200 km along the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) and at urban hubs by 2030.

The refuelling station in Neumünster will be seamlessly integrated into the existing infrastructure of the MB Energy Group’s Commercial Road Transport division, which operates more than 400 conventional refuelling stations, and, like these, will be operated within the tankpool24 network, which comprises over 2,000 filling stations in Europe and more than 750 in Germany.

“This hydrogen refuelling station is another step forward for us,” says Philipp Kroepels, Director of New Energy at MB Energy. “We are convinced that hydrogen will play a key role in the energy supply of tomorrow, and we are proud to be making a concrete contribution to the hydrogen economy in Germany.”

“By acquiring the refuelling station in Neumünster, we are reaffirming our commitment to building a reliable and scalable network of refuelling stations so that we can offer our customers carbon-free energy products,” explains Florian Lückmann, Director of Commercial Road Transport at MB Energy. “Hydrogen is a practical and promising energy source for long-distance transport, and this refuelling station is an excellent addition to our existing network and our fuel card business, enabling us to offer both existing and new customers a wider range of solutions.”

The MB Energy Group is continuing to drive forward the implementation of its multi-fuel approach in commercial road transport and is investing in hydrogen, biofuels and synthetic fuels (e-fuels) to offer its customers tailor-made solutions on their path to decarbonisation. The filling station in Neumünster complements the recently inaugurated hydrogen refuelling station in Lübeck. Furthermore, the MB Energy Group has already built two hydrogen refuelling stations in Sweden through its Swedish subsidiary and has secured funding for further sites.

“We are delighted to have found a partner in MB Energy that is committed to driving forward the market for zero-emission heavy goods transport,” adds Dr Stefan Rehm, Managing Director of Hypion. “With our concept of integratedH2 hubs combining production and distribution, as well as the use of sustainable hydrogen for mobility, we are in a position to work together to contribute to the development of clusters and, ultimately, to the necessary network of refuelling stations for long-distance transport.”

With four hydrogen refuelling stations now in operation, MB Energy is underlining its aim to enable future-oriented commercial transport solutions and to drive forward the energy transition in the mobility sector.
